Response to L.A. County Financial Hardship

Statement from the CAPE Board of Directors in response to Los Angeles County's recent notice of financial hardship due to COVID-19

This morning, County CEO Sachi Hamai released a statement notifying employees that she intends to submit a budget to the Board of Supervisors on June 29 that will include not only program cuts, but also potential layoffs.

The CEO’s message has undoubtably alarmed many and CAPE is working hard to find common sense solutions to minimize/avert layoffs and save jobs.

This is not the first time CAPE has had to work with L.A. County to protect jobs during financial hardships. During the previous cases, CAPE lead the way in working together to minimize reductions and/or avoid layoffs entirely.

As union members, we have job security protections and a process the County must abide by, even in the event of layoffs. Download a copy of your CAPE contract/MOU here.

To be clear, this process will not be easy.

Just like in the past, CAPE and the Coalition of County Unions will work directly with the CEO and the Board of Supervisors to locate cost-cutting alternatives as well as help secure more revenue from the federal government before the September Budget Adjustments.

We will continue to keep you updated on new developments as we work to find solutions that that will save money and protect jobs.
