CAPE Guidance for Members RE: SEIU ULP Strike Next Week

SEIU 721 has announced an Unfair Labor Practice Strike to be scheduled from Monday, April 28, at 7pm to Wednesday, April 30, at 6:59pm. This is not a regular contract strike as they are not striking over wages or working conditions. We support our union siblings at SEIU as they fight for a fair contract and support their efforts, and condemn the County for its unfair labor practice violations against SEIU. Many members have asked how they can support SEIU members in their ULP strike. CAPE urges our members to follow their consciences as to how to support SEIU at this critical time. Below, are some guidelines of your rights as an individual who wants to show support for SEIU and responsibilities you have as a CAPE union member.

How is what SEIU is doing at this time different than CAPE?

  • CAPE continues to bargain in a good faith effort with the County of Los Angeles.
  • CAPE has not declared a strike or called for a strike vote.
  • CAPE is not engaging in a sympathy strike or work stoppage during bargaining.

How can CAPE members support SEIU 721 during their strike?

  • Bring supplies and encouragement: Coffee, snacks, water, and words of support can go a long way for striking workers holding the line. It’s a simple way to show respect and boost morale.
  • Continue wearing your CAPE Polo shirt and/or union buttons and swag throughout the week.
  • Continue participating in CAPE’s Unity Breaks when scheduled.
  • Sign CAPE’s Petition calling on the Board of Supervisors to have the CEO Office do what’s right by giving us a fair contract. Click here to sign.
  • CAPE members may choose, as a matter of personal conscience, not to cross a picket line in solidarity with striking workers.
  • Should your conscience compel you to participate, you must be outside of your working hours. Take a photo of a time stamp or other evidence of when you clocked out either on a break or after your work shift.
  • Probationary staff should not participate at this time

Our visibility on the field and in our offices are the strength we need at the table for a fair contract and a way to support SEIU and all within the County Coalition of Unions (CCU).

Can I work remotely during the SEIU strike?

  • CAPE members should continue to follow their regular telework/work schedules.

Still have questions?

CAPE members with specific questions during this time should reach out to CAPE staff or email us at [email protected].
