The Partners of Ford & Wallach, one of California’s preeminent workers’ compensation law firms, will be holding a special CAPE Night: Worker’s Compensation training session on Wednesday, May

We often hear the saying, "Health is wealth," and it couldn't be truer.

We are a successful and thriving union, but a strong contract means little if members aren’t aware of our rights in the workplace and empowered to exercise them.

By now I hope that every CAPE member living in the Third Supervisorial District has already voted for our candidate, Sheila Kuehl. She is clearly the more experienced candidate and strongly supported by all the County unions.

There is an old saying in Washington, D.C., politics, “If you’re not at the table, you’re probably on the menu.” The same is unfortunately true for L.A. County politics, and the point is especially true for the 2014 and 2016 L.A. County Supervisor races.

At the urging of L.A. Mayor Garcetti, and over the strong objections of Los Angeles City and County Unions, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed the legislation that would have restored balance to the City and County Employee Relations Commissions.

Mark your calendars. The Los Angeles County Choices Annual Benefits Enrollment begins October 1 and continues through October 31, 2014. All eligible Choices County employees will have an opportunity during the Annual Benefits Enrollment to review their benefit elections and make changes for 2015.

The CAPE Board of Directors Election this summer determined who would fill the expiring terms of four (4) CAPE Board incumbents as well as one (1) vacant seat on the board.  Seven (7) candidates, including the incumbents, stepped up for the opportunity to serve on the Board. All four incumbents - Lisa Andres, Assessor; John Fallon, DPW; Barbara Volz, DPW; and Dennis Ruh, DPW - were reelected to another two-year term. The fifth-place candidate, Brent Decker, Assessor, was officially sworn-in to serve a one-year term at the regularly scheduled board meeting on September 11, 2014.

A fair and independent County Employee Relations Commission -- ERCOM -- is the goal of legislation sponsored by the 10 County employee unions of the CCU. The measure, AB 1881, is authored by Assembly Member Reggie Jones Sawyer.

Sometime ago, at the request of the Chief Information Office, a Countywide study was conducted with the goal of appropriately classifying positions performing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related functions as their primary responsibility. The reason for the study, according to Management, was that the lack of GIS specific classifications hindered efforts to recruit, develop and maintain GIS technical expertise on staff.
